Understanding the treatment

What is reconstructive surgery?

Reconstructive surgery repairs or reshapes tissue affected by birth differences, developmental conditions, trauma, infection, tumours or other disease. Treatment may aim to improve movement or everyday function as well as appearance.

The appropriate operation depends on the condition, available tissue and your general health. Some problems can be addressed in one procedure; others need staged surgery, rehabilitation or care from several specialists.

Reconstruction options

Breast reconstruction, reduction and scar revision

Breast reconstruction

Breast reconstruction aims to rebuild the form and balance of the breast following loss or damage. The method and timing depend on the individual situation, any other treatment and the tissue available. Symmetry, sensation and appearance may remain different from an unoperated breast.

Breast reduction

Breast reduction surgery removes excess breast tissue, fat and skin to reduce size and improve proportion. It can also be considered when breast weight contributes to physical discomfort.

Scar revision

Scar revision aims to make a scar less conspicuous or improve a scar-related functional problem. The plan depends on the scar's location, size and maturity. Revision changes a scar; it does not erase it.

Face and facial function

Facial reconstructive procedures

Illness, trauma and conditions present from birth can affect both facial appearance and function. Assessment considers the affected structure and the support needed alongside surgery.

Cleft lip and cleft palate repair

Repair addresses a gap in the lip or palate. Feeding, speech, hearing, dental development and breathing concerns may require coordinated care over time. Surgery is part of an individual treatment plan, and further procedures or therapy may be needed as a child grows.

Ear reconstruction

Reconstruction may be considered for an ear that is underdeveloped from birth or has been partly lost or altered by injury. The available tissue, the nature of the defect and the patient's goals guide the approach.

Nose reconstruction

Reconstructive treatment may address changes to the nose following trauma or loss of tissue. Both the external form and any effect on nasal function need assessment when planning repair.

Repair and tissue planning

Hand surgery and tissue expansion

Hand reconstructive surgery

Hand reconstruction addresses problems that affect the strength, movement or flexibility of the hands, wrists and fingers. The specific injury or condition determines the surgical options and whether rehabilitation is needed to support recovery.

Tissue expansion

Tissue expansion gradually stretches nearby skin to create additional coverage for reconstruction. It can be used in breast reconstruction and selected repairs after injury or for conditions present at birth. Expansion generally involves a series of appointments before the next surgical stage.

Your consultation

A plan built around the condition

Bring details of previous operations, investigations and treatment, where available. Discuss functional difficulties, discomfort, appearance, your health and the outcome you would find meaningful.

Dr. Ashutosh Misra can discuss suitable options, expected scars, possible stages, recovery and limitations. The risks vary with the operation and may include bleeding, infection, wound problems, altered sensation, incomplete improvement or further surgery. Clear expectations and follow-up are part of planning reconstructive care.
