Risk can increase with age and a family history of varicose veins. Pregnancy, particularly repeated pregnancies, can contribute to changes in venous circulation. Excess weight and long periods of standing can also play a part.

Discuss work that involves prolonged sitting or standing, previous vein problems and any history of blood clots during your assessment.

Endovenous laser ablation uses heat to close a vein that is contributing to the problem. A thin laser fibre is introduced through a small access point, with ultrasound guidance. Local anaesthetic is commonly used around the vein.

Laser energy is delivered as the fibre is withdrawn, causing the treated vein to close. Blood then returns through other functioning veins. The procedure is often performed as a day-case treatment; the time required depends on the veins and any additional procedures.

Small access points and local anaesthesia may allow a quicker recovery than some open operations, but they do not mean the treatment is free of pain, scarring or complications.

You will receive advice about walking, wound care and whether compression stockings are needed. Return to work, exercise and travel depends on the treatment and your circumstances. Bruising, soreness or a pulling feeling along the treated vein can occur.

Possible complications include inflammation of the vein, skin discolouration, numbness, burns, infection and blood clots such as deep vein thrombosis. Your clinician should explain your individual risks and symptoms that need urgent review.

The aim is to improve the problems caused by the affected veins. Not every visible vein will necessarily disappear, and further varicose veins can develop over time. Outcomes depend on the anatomy and procedure; a single success percentage does not predict an individual result.
