Understanding plantar warts.
Warts are skin growths caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). Their appearance varies: some are rough or raised, while others are flatter. Plantar warts, also called verrucas, develop on the soles of the feet and can become uncomfortable under the pressure of standing or walking.
A plantar wart can occur at any age, and people with a weakened immune system may have greater difficulty clearing warts. Not every wart requires immediate treatment: some resolve on their own, while persistent, painful or uncertain lesions need assessment.
Reasons to seek advice
When a wart becomes troublesome.
Reasons to discuss treatment include pain when walking, repeated irritation, a wart that keeps returning or concern about its appearance. A clinician can distinguish a wart from other causes of a painful or thickened area of skin.
Tell the clinician how long it has been present, whether it has changed and what you have already tried. A rapidly growing, bleeding or otherwise unusual lesion may need further investigation instead of being treated automatically as a wart.
Choosing treatment
Where laser treatment fits.
The options depend on the diagnosis, symptoms and previous response. They may include observation, a suitable topical treatment, freezing or a procedure for a persistent wart. Laser treatment may be considered when a wart has not responded to other approaches.
For laser treatment, the area may be numbed before the wart is treated. More than one session may be needed. It is not a guaranteed painless treatment, and suitability for a child requires an individual discussion about comfort, cooperation and alternatives.
The aim is to clear the treated wart while managing the effects on surrounding skin. Warts can return after treatment.
Aftercare
Care for the treated foot.
Follow the wound-care and activity instructions provided for the procedure. Soreness, swelling or colour change can occur after laser treatment, and pressure on the sole may be uncomfortable while it heals. Bleeding, scarring and infection are possible.
- Keep the area clean and follow advice on dressings and when it should be kept dry.
- Dry your feet after washing and change damp socks.
- Do not share towels, socks or footwear.
- Avoid picking the wart and wash your hands after touching it.
- Use footwear in communal changing or shower areas as advised.
Routine airing or household disinfectants do not guarantee prevention of recurrence. Seek advice for increasing pain, redness, discharge or delayed healing.
Your consultation
Plan treatment and its cost.
The number, size and location of the warts, the method selected and the sessions needed affect cost. A consultation is the time to discuss expected discomfort, the recovery plan and the possibility of repeat treatment.
Bring details of previous wart treatments and any medical conditions or medicines that affect healing. A suitable plan should address the specific skin problem rather than promise a single treatment for every wart.
