What is chin surgery?
Chin surgery, also called mentoplasty or genioplasty, reshapes the chin. Reduction can address an overly prominent chin, while augmentation adds projection to an underdeveloped chin. The aim and the operation are selected after assessing your facial proportions.
The relationship between the chin, lips, cheeks and nose matters when considering a change to the profile. A consultation helps clarify which feature you wish to change and what surgery could reasonably achieve.
Treatment options
Different approaches to chin reshaping
Chin reduction
Reduction reshapes or removes a planned amount of chin bone to reduce prominence. Access may be through an incision inside the mouth or beneath the chin, depending on the operation.
Chin augmentation with an implant
An implant adds projection to an underprojected chin. It is placed against the chin bone and secured as required by the chosen technique. This is an augmentation procedure, rather than a reduction.
Sliding genioplasty
The surgeon repositions part of the chin bone to change projection or shape, then fixes it in the planned position. This uses your own bone rather than adding an implant.

Assessment considers the chin’s size, position and relationship to the jaw and other facial features. A concern about projection needs a different plan from a concern about an overly prominent chin. Bite or jaw-alignment problems may require a separate assessment.
