What is rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty, also called nose correction or nose reshaping surgery, changes the bone and cartilage that support the nose. It may reduce or increase certain dimensions, refine a bump or nostril width, or address changes related to an injury or a condition present from birth.
The aim is a nose that sits comfortably with your other facial features. The extent of change depends on your nasal structure, skin and treatment goals.
Your consultation
Choosing the surgical approach
There is no single sequence of changes that suits every nose. Your surgeon will assess what needs reshaping and whether tissue needs to be reduced, repositioned or added. A cartilage graft may be needed to support or build up part of the nose.
Read more about planning for nose surgery.
Closed rhinoplasty
The incisions are made inside the nose, allowing access to the supporting bone and cartilage.
Open rhinoplasty
Internal incisions are joined by a small incision across the strip of skin between the nostrils. This provides additional access when the planned correction requires it.
Procedure steps
How nose correction is performed
The anaesthesia plan depends on the operation and your health. Local anaesthesia with sedation or general anaesthesia may be used, as advised by the surgical and anaesthetic team.
- Anaesthesia: medication is given before the procedure begins.
- Incisions: the surgeon uses the planned open or closed approach.
- Reshaping: the underlying nasal bone and cartilage are adjusted.
- Septum assessment: a deviated septum may be corrected where this is part of the agreed treatment plan.
- Closure: the incisions are closed and support or dressings are applied as needed.
After your procedure
Recovery after rhinoplasty
After surgery, you are monitored as the anaesthetic wears off. Discharge may be on the same day or after an overnight stay, depending on the procedure, your health and your recovery.
A nasal splint is often worn for around one week. Bruising and swelling around the eyes can take several weeks to settle. Swelling in the nose improves gradually, and the final shape takes months to become clear.
Your surgeon will advise when you can return to work and exercise. Strenuous activity is commonly restricted for around four to six weeks, with timing adjusted to your healing and the operation performed.

An informed choice
Discussing benefits and risks
Rhinoplasty has risks, including bleeding, infection, breathing difficulties and an outcome that may need further correction. Consultation should cover these possibilities, your medical history, aftercare and realistic expectations. Bring any safety questions to the discussion so you can make an informed decision.
