Understanding the treatment

What is earlobe repair?

Earlobes can stretch or tear after an earring is pulled, prolonged use of heavy earrings or other trauma. Age-related tissue changes and previous surgery can also affect their shape.

Earlobe repair aims to close a split or reshape damaged tissue. A small stretched piercing and a complete tear may need different techniques, so examination comes before a treatment recommendation.

Treatment options

Can an earlobe be repaired without stitches?

Selected incomplete earlobe splits have been treated with clinician-applied chemical techniques, including trichloroacetic acid. This is a chemical treatment, not surgical glue, and it is not suitable for every split or stretched lobe.

Such approaches may require repeat treatments and can cause pigment changes or scarring; closure is not guaranteed. An established or larger split may be better addressed with surgical repair. Assessment is needed to discuss which approach is appropriate.

Procedure steps

How surgical repair is performed

Earlobe repair is commonly performed under local anaesthesia to numb the area. The technique depends on the size and shape of the split, the remaining tissue and any existing scarring.

  1. Preparation: the surgeon marks and numbs the area.
  2. Tissue adjustment: scarred or healed edges may be trimmed so the tissue can be brought together.
  3. Closure: the lobe is reshaped and closed with sutures.

Some repairs use absorbable sutures; others require stitch removal. The choice does not remove the need for follow-up, and no technique can guarantee a scar-free result.

After your procedure

Caring for the repair

A dressing may be applied after the procedure. Follow the cleaning, dressing and ointment instructions given by your surgeon; these measures help care for the wound but cannot eliminate the risk of infection.

  • Keep the area clean and dry as instructed.
  • Use any prescribed ointment at the time and frequency advised.
  • Avoid pulling or putting pressure on the repaired lobe.
  • Attend follow-up and stitch removal if required. Removable stitches are often taken out after around one to two weeks, depending on the repair.

Some discomfort, swelling or minor early spotting may occur. Persistent bleeding, increasing pain, redness or discharge should be reported to the treating team rather than assumed to be part of normal healing.

Healing and future care

Scars and returning to earrings

A scar remains after surgical closure. It generally softens and fades with time, but its appearance and the speed of healing vary. The surgeon will explain what to expect for the technique used.

Heavy earrings or repeated pulling can damage the lobe again. Discuss when, where and whether to re-pierce before wearing earrings, and avoid heavy jewellery while healing. Follow the individual aftercare plan to protect the repair.
